2 in 1 Tetanus and Strangles

  • Equivac 2 in 1 is used in the prevention of tetanus due to Clostridium tetani and in the control of strangles due to Streptococcus equi subspecies equi in horses.
  • Equivac 2 in 1 is one of a range of Equivac products available for tetanus and strangles treatment and control.

  • Equivac 2 in 1 provides a more practical and economical means of vaccinating simultaneously for both tetanus and strangles than purchasing and administering two separate vaccines.
  • Prevention of tetanus: A single dose of Equivac 2 in 1 given to an unimmunised horse at the time of wounding or surgery may not prevent tetanus. For short-term prevention of tetanus, Equivac® TAT should also be used. See entry for Equivac TAT.
  • Combined Active-Passive Protection: Equivac 2 in 1 can be administered simultaneously with Equivac TAT. A separate needle and syringe should be used for each product and administration should be on opposite sides of the body. If initiating a primary course the second dose of Equivac 2 in 1 should be administered 3 to 6 weeks later.

    • or primary immunisation of horses against strangles, horses 3 months of age or older should be given 3 doses of vaccine at intervals no less than 2 weeks apart. For ongoing immunisation, booster doses should be given annually, or every 6 months for horses at higher risk of exposure. Equivac® S may be used for strangles vaccination where tetanus inclusion is not warranted.
    • For primary immunisation of horses against tetanus, horses 3 months of age and older should be given 2 doses at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks, followed by a booster 12 months later. Further boosters for tetanus are recommended by the Equine Infectious Diseases Advisory Board every 12 months for maximal protection against tetanus infection.
    • The product leaflet should be consulted for guidance as to the use of strangles vaccine in the event of an outbreak.
    • It is recommended that strangles vaccination be a component of a herd-health biosecurity-focussed management program for the prevention and control of strangles in horses.
